Oracle 8.1.7 Windows 2000 Install does Not Work

I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 Personal Edition on Windows 2000 Professional SP1. Every time I hit the Install button, the hourglass appears for 2 seconds, and the Setup program disappears (Nothing Happens). The same thing happens when I try to install the Oracle Documentation CD.

I am logged on as administrator - the computer is a Dell 3300 with 512 ram and a Pentium 4. The computer is part of a home network (it is in a WORKGROUP with 2 Win 98 machines).

No clues exist in the event log, and Oracle never creates any files at all (as far as I can tell).

Has anyone got any ideas, or is anyone else having this problem?

(My system path statement includes C:\winnt\system32, I've never seen an NT box that did not).
