In my current project I'm in an environment where they have used autoextend on without further clauses. So what did they get? Increment 2048 (= db_block_size) maxsize = 4G. As to the latter parameter: the filesystem the tablespace is on, is not that big. As to the former parameter: the autoextend has been applied to TEMP and RBS. Which performance impact do you expect by having to extend such a tablespace with 2k every time?
(This is not meant as a rhetorical question) In short : autoextend on means you can't exercise control anymore, and you will only notice it when the disk is full. I'm almost sure that people which use autoextend in this fashion, can't resolve that problem.
