Interesting. My course notes clearly state that there will be a checkpoint 'n' seconds after the last one (but only if LOG_CHECKPOINT_TIMEOUT is set to 'n' seconds. Plus a whole load of other times such as TS being taken offline, instance shutdown etc. Mind you, my notes are O7 and this has probably changed at O8 and O8i - I must get some time to read up :o)
