VERY URGENT : Cannot connect to sqlplus (oerr 1033)

I get the following error while attempting to connect to my Oracle (8.0.6)
database :



ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress



And the instance has been succesfully loaded quite a while ago (10 minutes).
Any hint appreciated...
