I'm having the same problem on Solaris 8. For some reason, Oracle 8.1.7 can't start a DB instance.

I completely uninstalled 8.1.7 and tried installing 8.1.5 and it works fine...

I'm running Solaris 8 with Maintenance update 3 on an Ultra10 with 512 MB RAM. Alex
