This is a known bug, which I thought got sorted in 8.1.6.3, so I'm slightly surprised to see it happening on 8.1.7.

Oddly, I'm running 8.1.6.0, and I don't have that problem (though I did *once*!!).

You're quite right though: whatever the service says its status is, I've never had a problem just firing up server manager or SQL Plus and connecting. When I was getting the problem, I didn't let it bother me (though it *was* annoying), because full functionality never seemed affected.

You might want to check Metalink to see if there's a patch for it, though.
