On certain ports like DEC Alpha (hard to say compaq) and AIX, Oracle skips a certain amount at the beginning of the raw device before you find the header block. On DEC Alpha the amout was 64K, so if you are copying a cooked file system datafile to raw you need to skip the first 64K on Dec ALpha. I don't know if this is true on all the versions of Oracle on Dec Alpha. Its pretty easy to confirm by creating a raw device datafile and dd'ing and looking at the structure.
