Installing 8.1.7 tip

I've done three installs so far and the installer is definitely quirky. The solutions posted on Metalink did not work for us. You cannot count on either the typical or minimal installs working. Instead choose a custom install. The first time through uncheck everything you are permitted to uncheck and install the bare minimum (less than Oracle's minimum install). Then install the other pieces a few at a time saving the web pieces for next to last and the OEM pieces for last.

As always if you choose several pieces at one time and the installer chokes you probably won't get any of those pieces installed. Unfortunately, the installer takes about three minutes from the time you press "next install" until you can actually choose anything else to install. It takes about 1.5 hours to get every piece installed, if your site needs to have everything, so leave enough time. And that doesn't include a sample database, which can take another 1.5 hours if you need a lot of the Java capabilities.

By comparison a typical install of Personal Oracle 8.1.5 on an Windows 2000 laptop with a database takes only around 45 minutes.
