selects can be slow on defcall etc because the underlying tables need to read untill the
jigh watermark in other words the number of blocks in the table remain at the highest they
have ever been. i'd be very surprised if these tables were the cause of your problem.
8i is much quicker than 7 and there is a min_communication parameter which needs less
info to be compared for each update.
