Marc,

Alter database begin backup (all datafiles in backupmode) or
alter tablespace begin backup (only the datafiles of that tablespace)

Don't forget to end the backup in Oracle !!!!! See the syntax for the alter database command !!!

Please read: backup and recovery by Rama Velpuri !! It has a complete VMS backup script !!!!

VMS the system that IS what MS wants to be....
