From what I understand,
it's BAD BAD BAD to back up online redo logs when doing a hot backup.

I think it's okay when doing a cold backup though.

However, you say you are switching log file and then backing up the control file. I don't understand if this is necessary. Don't you only have to back up the control file after structural changes are made to the database? Any suggestions to clarify this point in my head woule be greatly appreciated.
