Error while starting sqlplus

I'm new to oracle 8i on Intel Solaris. I just installed and tried to
run sqlplus, then I encountered error saying "message file
sp1<lang?:msb not found. Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus."
Any advise would be appreciated.
