Think about the physics of the situation. Would you get more IO / second on one 36 gig drive or 9 4 gig drives stripped together (across multiple cards)? You have the same storage in both cases. In one case you have 1 spindle and one set of heads and in the other you have 9 spindles with 9 sets of heads. Answer: you will be able to get more IO / second on the 9 4 gig drives. (assuming reasonable drives). Also avoid RAID 5 go for 0+1 hardware level raid.
