Typically there will two main things you'll be concerned about

• performance - which typically means trying to spread your I/O load as evenly as you can across your available disks
• administration - ease of backup, being to able to shift files around (to achieve the performance above), being able to "offline" parts of the system whilst leaving other active

Once these are decided upon , file layout and sizes tend to take care of themselves.
