newbietrying to overcome ORA-12514 using Listener

I am trying to understand how to initialise and employ a listener on my standalone
RH6.2 linux distribution. I want to initiated a shared server connection as opposed
to a dedicated one.
If this is possible to achieve, am I correct in starting the listener and issuing the command "sqlplus system/manager_at_oralin" (having previously started the database).

Because on entering this, I receive the error "ORA-12514: TNS LISTENER could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor"

In the tnsnames.ora file "SERVICE_NAME=oralin.localhost.com" is present.

Is this correct ? Or should I be checking other things to ensure correctness.

Thanks in advance Received on Thu Jan 18 2001 - 16:11:36 CST
