A commit causes the redo buffer to flush to disk, so the situation you describe is not possible.

Osborne publishes an introduction to Oracle, which is a good starting place. OReilly publishes a more advanced book. Try searching amazon.com for 'unix' and 'oracle'. When you find a book that looks like what you want, read the provided reviews written by individuals.
