Or worse yet (this just happened to me last week) finding out that your backup software (Legato) has lost it's catalog indexes. It can read the tapes, it just didn't know which tapes to read. Unfortunately, Legato never let us know that this was a problem since last October. Our SysAdmin had to rebuild the indexes somehow before restoring could take place.
