Can you recover from backup of ORADATA directory?

I have an Oracle 8i database I wish to restore, but the only files I have
are the files under the "Oradata" directory?  I have tried setting up a
database with the same name, deleting the folder it created under Oradata,
and replacing it with my backed up data, but this did not work.  Does anyone
know of a way to do this?
