FWIW, my workaround was simpler, shorter and more dangerous. In other words, just plain better ;-)
I just put the expression
foo=${VERSION:="8.1"}
into the script right after VERSION should have been winkled out and set.
Since I'm in a non-production environment, I'm hoping I can get away with it......
