Installing Oracle 8i on Redhat - problem with jre

I'm trying to install Oracle on Redhat and I've got the jre 1.1.6 v5 installed and it works. Then next step is to setup a link to the jre so I'm doing the following:

ln -s /usr/local/jre116_v5 /usr/local/jre

which as near as I can tell is what's needed to get things ready to go on the java end. I can type /usr/local/jre/bin/jre and get the usual default help listing from the jre, so that seems to be correct. But every time I try to run runInstaller from the cdrom I get a message of

Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre. Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess() : -1
:Bad address

Anyone got an answer to this? It's got to be something very simple that I'm missing.
