So you want to be a DBA. The hell with expensive "Instant DBA" courses.
Just READ ALL the manuals, not just look at them. Install several versions of RDBMS on your Linux/NT machine at home. Play around with ALL the features. Read LOTS of database white papers, articles, books. Learn some scripting languages and SQL, play with those for fun. Read design, software engineering and system administration books. Maybe even get a CS degree. Then ask for HUGE OUTRAGEOUS MONEY.
If you don't like to do most of the above do something else for a job, you will just be an eater-breather in the profession and depress the OUTRAGEOUS LARGE UNBELIEVABLE CASH THAT WE DRAG TO THE BANK IN BIG GUNNY SACKS. The instant DBA after 40 hours of "Training Courses" and no experience or interest in any related field is almost worthless to a money making organization. These boobs can point and click for a half hour to add one user or set up a default install but lack the administration, scripting, engineering and experience to actually run a system.
