The only other routine time when UNDO$ is updated is when rollback segments are brought online or taken offline.

Quite right - I stand guilty of the commonest Oracle error: assuming something that was true in 1986 is still true. Thanks for pointing out the error.

By the way, do you happen to know if UNDO$ is updated at anytime other than shutdown ?
