TNS_ADMIN question

I remember at 8.0.5 you could create a TNS_ADMIN registry key to point the Oracle Client to a look in a different folder for a TNSNAMES.ORA file (and others). Is that still valid at 8i? If so, where do I create the key? It doesn't work in the same place as before. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
