Are you sure that the database is "hanging"? When you do a shutdown immediate, current transactions are rolled back. The rolling back of these transactions can take a long time. Personally, I've seen it take over an hour for a shutdown immediate to complete. This was because a very large transaction was rolling back. How long have you waited before you issued the shutdown abort?
