When dbshut is used, which uses the immediate option or if you manually log into oracle and use srvmgrl and type shutdown immediate.
This one instance just hangs unless we issue the abort option. We have several other instances on this box that do not have this problem.
My other points is that this instance starts up and take updates without any problem. it just will not shutdown properly.
