u actually shouldn't get a bunch of errors from .protocol.ora, it simply would be ignored. I have about 300ips i had to put into that file, and I used a perl script to get rid of all endlines after putting IPs into the file.

perl -e '$a=<>;print $a; @foo = <>; for (@foo) {chomp} print join("", @foo);' protocol.original >protocol.fix
but put the tcp.validnode_checking=yes in the first line
