using a union is going to force a sort which maybe be where the bottleneck is. Can you include an explain plan or the view definition with the table characteristics? Just for grins, you may want to throw union alls in your view and see if there is a difference in the performance. I realize the data coming back may not be correct but you'll have an idea where the bottleneck is.
