difference in init<SID>.ora between Linux and Solaris?

I have successfully installed an Oracle EE 8.1.6 on Linux, but was unable to start it up

ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
SVRMGR> I did a diff on initHOME.ora and init<SID>.ora from one of my solaris database, and the only difference I notice there is that my Linux parameters are smaller (modified for Linux box memory size).

Am I doing something wrong?

Is there are a FAQ on this?

In case I forgot to mention:
We use Oracle 7.3.4 and 8.1.6 on Solaris 2.6, 2.7 boxes
