It is a Microsoft product... :-)

One thing you might look at is how much IO capability it has. If you have just one disk it won't matter what RDBMS you use you would be limited to the total IO that that disk could handle. I would go looking at root causes first. (Disk IO capacity, what is the execution plan?) Etc.
