oracle 8.1.6 setting question

When I did


    set lines 1000


at sqlplus promt to view some data. After that when tried to do 'desc
table_name'


the result doesn't look fine as we can see in Oracle 7.3 for the description
of the table. If someone know to resolve the problem please help.
