I had a few errors like this when installing the Enterprise Edition on a Pentium MMX with only 32 meg of memory - it was running like a dog (I can't vouch that ther were the exact same errors as your's, it was late '99 I think).

I got around the error first by running the install program at a lower priority, using nice.

After that, I got myself some more memory.

You can always install the starter database manually, on its own, once you've got the rest of the Oracle installation in place.
