there are several "backup" options available for both HP-UX and for NT. on HP-UX, you can use the dump/restore, tar, dd, etc to copy data from disk to disk or disk to tape. several vendors offer "backup" software solutions, such as hp, ca, veritas, legato, etc.

the frequency of backup would be determined by the system or database administrator, depending on the requirements of the application(s). on HP-UX, cron is often used schedule processes, including scripts that perform backups. NT provides a scheduler service that performs a similar function.

again, that depends on the select backup software. some (the HP-UX dump utility, for example) perform a "full" backup of a file system. others, like veritas, offer several other options, like "block level incremental backup" which can be much faster than "full" backups.

most backup software, by default, will not remove the backed up data from disk. some of the backup software may allow you to specify that some data be removed from the disk.

please not, that a os-level file system backup is NOT sufficient for an active Oracle database. please consult the Oracle documentation, it covers this topic in detail. Received on Sat Oct 28 2000 - 11:25:17 CDT
