I think we need a bit more information to solve this....

Try posting a snip of the alert.log in this group - That might help solving it.

When you write "initializing" - do you mean the "CREATE DATABASE" or "STARTUP"? I am using Solaris 8 and oracle 8.1.6 on a Ultra5 without any problems...
