I am not sure about 8i, but I recently had to upgrade my boss's laptop,
Win95 with 8.0 personal. It took me quite a while to realize that there
is NO option to create a new instance or database. Creating a new
database on Win95 is not possible, only option is to use use the
existing base or reinstall.
