Link error on install of 8.1.5 client on HPUX

I'm having trouble installing the Oracle 8.1.5 client libraries on my HP9000, HPUX 11.0. The file copy goes just fine, but when the linking starts, I get nothing but errors from the runInstaller that it was unable to link <module> with <make file> in <path>.

Now, if I open a shell and cd to /space/oracle/product/8.1.5/network/lib and execute the last line in /space/oracle/product/8.1.5/install/make.log (which is the attempted make command) it works just fine.

I'm stumped! Any ideas where to go from here?
