In earlier releases, the only way to pass data blocks from buffer to buffer was to bounce them off the disks.
In 8.1 Oracle introduced cache fusion, so that readconsistent blocks could be built at one node and passed through the interconnect to the demanding node, but dirty blocks still had to be bounced to disks if a second node wanted to do an update on the block.
In 9, I believe one node can send another node a dirty block in CURRENT mode for the second node to update it, without having to bounce it do disc.
