How can I retreive previous commands?

Im MySQL I hit up-arrow and can bring back the last command, or pressing it n-times to go back to the nth previous command, I can then line edit and botta-bing botta-boom I generate a new query.

At the 8i line, pressing up-arrow returns ^[[A instead, Is there a setting that enables this, or some other means to go back? Its slow, tedious and annoying to have to repeatedly type in long queries.

HUG,
PG
