I don't think you can get the spec for SQL*Net anywhere outside Oracle. All you can do is simply connect to the database using (i.e. on top of) SQL*Net and try a simply select. Actually tnsping doesn't do a real database connection, much less a select inside the database. In addition to using a packet sniffer, you may get more meaningful information by turning on the listener tracing. Set the level to the highest 16 and read the listener log. I don't know much about it so I can't help.

You need to restrict your selection of newsgroups to post to. Posting to too many at a time smacks of adolescence.
