Doc ID: Note:1012147.7 Subject: INSTALLER HANGS ON HP-UX 11.X Type: PROBLEM Status: PUBLISHED Content Type: TEXT/PLAIN Creation Date: 14-JUL-1998 Last Revision Date: 16-JUN-1999 Language: USAENG
Problem Description:
You are installing 8.0.x on an HP 11.00. After mounting the CD correctly, executing "./orainst" hangs the Installer or the machine.
Problem Explanation:
Either way a reboot is required to gain access to the CD-ROM again. This
occurs
because the Oracle Installer on HP 11.00 requires a file locking request to
be
processed by the OS. This is normally done by 2 daemons on HP:
o rpc.lockd
o rpc.statd
However, these are most likely not running on your machine.
Under normal circumstances, ie. on a hard disk drive, these locks are
handled
by the kernel and volume management software, so no daemons need to be
started.
That is why you'll notice that copying the CD to the hard disk will run the
Installer correctly.
Also, HP/UX uses the Portable File System (PFS) to mount the CD-ROM. PFS
mount
acts similar to Network File System (NFS) mount. NFS must be enabled for PFS
to work.
Solution: ENABLE THE NFS SERVER FUNCTION
Solution Description:
Enable NFS in the Systems Administrator Manager (SAM) without rebooting your machine by performing the following steps as root:
The Installer should now present the install screen to the terminal.
NOTE: If "orainst" has been cancelled, restart the Installer.
Solution Explanation:
The NFS server function must be enabled for PFS to work.

BUG:653019 Solution: START "RPC.LOCKD" AND "RPC.STATD" DAEMONS
Solution Description:
To start these daemons on HP 11.00, the following steps are required to be performed as root:
Solution Explanation:
The Installer should function correctly now.
Solution: Apply HP-UX firmware/PDC patch for K-Class systems
Solution Description:
You must apply the following HP-UX firmware/PDC patch for K-Class systems.
The
patch name is "PF_CUPVTFIX". Please contact your Hewlett-Packard vendor to
obtain the patch.
Solution Explanation:
This patch corrects intermittent Runaway Bus failures due to Runaway drive strength miscalculation
