My apologies. I didn't mean to imply that you were wrong; clearly you were right. I only meant to say that hearing again that "various and sundry" settings weren't there wasn't helping me understand the problem. And in fact, I still don't. Which of your statements should I take to be true; that the default environment I get when invoking cron isn't sufficient, or that there's no environment at all? And I'm not trying to be a wiseacre; I really am just trying to figure out why I have to take that extra step. For example, the $PATH. Since I'm explicitly giving the path to oraenv when I call it from my script, why should it matter what my path is to begin with? Neither in my .profile nor in my shell script is there anything to do with Oracle environmental stuff before or after orenv.

Not that it matters that much, since my problem is solved; I'm just curious.
