Susan,

This is perfectly acceptable and works well. To recover a database, you can restore from you cold backups and then apply the archived logs to bring it up to date. Just because you are running in ARCHIVEMODE does not mean that you have to do a Hot backup. Once you have settled on this as a backup strategy, make sure that you test, test and test your recovery procedures.
