Well, I'll try to add some "theory"... To learn the ways of a Oracle DBA, you have many things to study and practice before you can use the force wisely ;-)

An Oracle database management system is made up of two things: an instance and a database. The instance, through wich you access a database, is associated with one (and only one) database. The instance identifier is SID. The database is the physical part (files) and is identified by DB_NAME. The name is used e.g. in the statement 'create database <db_name>'. Unless adviced otherwise, the SID and DB_NAME used should be the same.

In a network of databases you add a domain to the database, DB_DOMAIN (defaults to "world"), to identify it globally, hence the global database name (GLOBAL_DB_NAME=DB_NAME.DB_DOMAIN). Default is "orcl.world".
