I would approach smaller companies. That's how I started out. Yes, I got a little bit lucky in that the people who hired me didn't know a lot about Oracle. But that only proves there's a lot of hidden opportunities out there. Are you smart? You've got to be smart to be a good DBA. Are you curious about things? You need to have an innate curiously about how things work in order to learn Oracle. I've done well for myself only because of the above two factors. (And a little luck of course). Entry level jobs ARE out there. At one point in time EVERY SINGLE DBA was an entry-level DBA. There's no way around that fact. Don't believe people who say there's "no jobs". That's BS. As a beginner, you'll just have to work a little harder to get that first break. But you can do it. It helps to know someone who can get you that first break. Don't be fussy about your first job. Get the experience and move on. Not all shops are 24x7, and therefore not as demanding. Learn as much as you can on your own. Install Oracle at home and hit the books. Learn learn learn and you've got it!
