have you looked at the alert log for the first instance? By default, dbshut performs a shutdown normal -- if there are connections to the first instance, dbshut will wait for those connections to exit. The alert log will show you if the shutdown is waiting for connections -- or you can just look at v$sessions

Also, try editing the dbshut script to make it do a shutdown immediate Received on Wed Sep 20 2000 - 01:06:58 CDT
