Failed connection via SqlPlus

When I start the listener after a reboot, or restart it with:

	lsnrctl stop
	lsnrctl start
I can connect via:
	sqlplus username/password_at_INSTANCE

fine on the first, third and fith try, but I get an ORA-03113 the second, fourth, and sixth time I try to connect. Thereafter, I can connect OK every time until the next reboot or lsnrctl restart.

Any idea what gives?

Oracle 8.1.5 on Redhat Linux 6.1. The database is on this server.
