A few ideas...get a list of potential trouble spots if he is aware of any. Also get a list of any regular tasks he has been doing by hand and has not got around to scripting. We all have a few of these types of things around. Make sure you understand his backup routine and are prepared to recover the database. Make sure he is on top of tablespace usage, disk usage etc...you want to make sure that they db will continue to operate correctly on a day to day basis until you get on top of it, so recovery and space are big potential problem spots.
