Look over some of the documentation for installing on both operating systems. We have Oracle installed on RedHat Linux 6.0, and some of the installation is a little tricky. I don't know if Solaris would be any easier. Check out the HOWTO's on the RedHat home site for installing Oracle if you do go Linux. It's an opinionated piece of writing, but has some excellent points of procedure for installing.
