Don't forget to factor in location. If you live in a Smalltown, USA then salaries will be lower. Larger markets may pay better, but sometimes the cost of living offsets the increase. Also, I've seen jobs in Atlanta with very similar duties range from 45-100K.

I live in Knoxville, TN which has been rated at paying 9-12% below the national average. The cost of living offsets much of this, but jobs are also fewer.

While I am fortunate to make more than average (hey, I work hard at it), senior developers in this area typically make 50-60K. Most of the ads for DBA's in the Knoxville-Oak Ridge area run 40-50K. The rates are somewhat depressed due to UTK and other schools churning out newbies, as well as people not wanting to leave the region.

There are a number of factors other than money (did I say that? slap me...). Salary surveys only paint a portion of the picture. For a comparison of salary equates from one city to another (and a nifty relocation calculator) see the members page at www.cruelworld.com.
