terminal column in v$session

we've got a java application connecting to oracle 8.1.5 through JDBC using the JDBC driver supplied by oracle. The application runs across multiple machines as part of a load balancing implementation.

Whenever it is running, if I query the v$session table on oracle, the terminal column (which should indicate the machine name) is always blank for these connections. The program column, however, does say 'JDBC-1.0-Client', but because terminal is empty, I can't determine which machine is holding the connection.

I'm really new to JDBC. Does anyone know why this is? And perhaps point me in a direction for something I might want to look at?

Thanks,
Gavin
