I think you'll find your ODBC tool is putting quotes around the names for you (if you do an Oracle trace during the create process you'll find out exactly what's happening). Oracle's default behaviour is to convert all identifiers to upper case, so if you did all of your creation via native tools you wouldn't have a problem. The quirks you're finding are not due to lack of knowledge on the database per se, but with the effects of the tools you're using on the database.
